Ett rådslag hålls i Mendota mellan en amerikansk fördragskkommission och Mdewakanton och Wahpekute Dakotas.
Wahpekutes har redan fått rykte om sig att ha varit knepiga, för att inte säga utgöra ett stort problem. Innan Minnesotaupprorets utbrott 1862 tvingades Mdewakantons (genom hot om indragna årliga utbetalningar) att kontrollera rebellband som Wahpkeutes ledda av Inkpaduta som redan 1857 skapat avsky bland de vita under Spirit Lake Massakern.
