Upper Chehalis talades av Satsop vid Satdsop River och egentliga Chehalis som bestod av fem grupper: Slacawams vid Chehalis River från Cloquallum Creek till mynningen av Black River ;Sqayaylq, kallade Squiaitl eller Kwaiailk vid Black River och norrut till början av Eld Inlet; Lmesluws nära Tenino ; Ilawiqs när Chehalis; Caxasn vid Upper Chehalis River runt Pe Ell. En övergångsgrupp språkligt sett mellan Upper Chehalis och Cowlitz bodde vid South Fork av Chehalis runt Boistfort.
