Nuu Chah Nulth - Nootka (Aht)
Väster och söder om Bella Collas hittar vi alltså de Sydliga Kwakiutl. Här talades Wakashan och grupper som talade det språket kom mer eller mindre att kallas Nootka eg Nuu Chah Nulth. De levde på väst och östsidan av Vancouver Island och på fastlandet mellan Douglas Channell och Rivers Inlet. Dialekter finns som är särskiljande: Nootkas (Aht, Mooachaht) på västkusten och Kwakitul på den östra kusten. Kwakiutl delas in i tre grupper efter dialekterna: Kwakiutl, egentliga på Vancouver Island och de två fastlandsgrupperna Haislas (bestånde av Kitimats och Kitlopes) och Heiltsuks eller Bella Bella, (Bestånde av Bella Bella, The China Hat people och Oweekanos). China Hat är namnet på ett berg nära Tolmie Channell där det fanns ett antal Heiltsukbyar.
Wakashanindianerna är mestadels fiskare och många arbetara i fiskkonservindustruin nuförtiden. De är ockås utmärkta träsnidare. Bor i byar med sin egen aristokrati. Under 17- och 1800- jagade Nootkas valar. Kwakiutlerna sägs vara de som uppfann de olika mansklubbarna, en säregenhet som finns hos de flesta nordvästfolken. Här fanns kannibalklubben, vilken mestadels förstås sysslade med symboliska riter.
1778 Hände det sig att James Cook träffade på Nootkafolken. Han välkomnades av hövidingen Maquinna som vägledde engelsmännen åren 1778-1792. Under den tiden slogs Spanien och Engand om kontrollen över över ”The Northern Pacific coast” som spaniorerna till slut tvingases överge. Maquinna mördade en amerikansk besättning 1803 och tog en engelsman till slav, John R Jewitt. The Haisals and Heiltsuks stred mot grannfolken Cowichans och andra Salishindianer, men en fred uppnåddes med Hudsons´s Bay Company efter 1817 när de byggde Fort Langely vid Frazierfloden.
I januari 1962 fanns det 6.698 Wakashantalande av vilket 2.680 räknades som Nootkas.
