DELAWARE - LENI LENAPE 
Många menar att ordet Lenape är den mer korrekta benämningen på Delawarerna och delawaretalande folk. Ordet förekommer emellertid nästan aldrig i kolonialtida dokument. Såväl indianer som kolonister tyckte uppenbarligen att det blev för krångligt att använda Lenape i dagligt tal. Eftersom indianerna normalt sett identifierade sig som ett folk från en särskilt plats eller en speciell flod, så kom de också med tiden att använda Delaware som identitetsbeteckning. Ordet är som alla vet ett låneord, men började användas av såväl indianer som kolonister redan i början av 1700-talet. (Se sid 13 Grumet: The Munsee indians. - 2009)
  Delawarerna kontrollerade landet som sträcker sig från vad som är nuvarande New Jersey genom östra Pennsylvania till Cape Henlopen i Delaware.

De folk som bodde vid Delawarefloden och som svenskarna umgicks med var Unamier som sedermera kom att kallas Delawarer (Egentliga delawarer). Lite längre norrut var det Munsees, och det var grupper bland dem som Holländarna köpte Manhattan av. Dessa kom snart också att kallas Delawarer.  

De vid Delawarefloden talade Unami (och kallade sig själva urpsrungligen Lenape/Renappi) ett språk som var besläktat men skilt från andra algonkinska dialekter. Lenape på Unami betyder ”vanliga, riktiga människor” och var det som ord som man identifierade sig med ursprungligen. Men av andra kallades de Unami, som t ex av de närbesläktade Munsees, vars hemland låg mellan nuvarande centrala New Jersey, och sträckte sig genom New York. Unami och Munsee var de ord som varje grupp benämnde den andra. Unami betyder på Munsee, ”folket vid nedre floden”. Så i mitten av 1700-talet kom kolonisterna att kalla såväl Unami som Munsees för Delawarer, ett namn som då var enkelt att användas av indianerna själva. Det var ju egentligen samma sak, d v s en geografiskt placering av en grupp, företrädesvis ett bevattningsområde, en flod. Denna flod, Delawarefloden, hemland för Unamilenaperna kallade de själva Lenapewihittuck, holländarna och svenskarna kallade området och floden för Sydfloden och engelsmännen kallade den Delaware.
