Hugenotter i kolonialhistorien


Med hugenotter avses de franska protestanter som var kalvinister i tro och lära och presbyterianer till kyrkoförfattningen. Man förföljdes svårt särskilt i Frankrike fram till Ediktet i Nantes 1598, som garanterade dem trosfrihet. Ediktet upphävdes emellertid 1685, vilket bla a resulterade i en omfattande utvandring, där många flydde till Amerika. Några hade redan tidigare försökt anlägga en koloni i Florida och South Carolina som inte blev långvarig. Senare kom man att spela en väsentlig roll i den holländska kolonin New Amsterdam (New York) och de blev viktiga för händelseutvecklingen i Rhode Island, Connecticut, staten New York, Delaware, Maryland och Pennsylvania.
