Baker Lake region of the Keewatin District of the Northwest Territories.

The results of field research conducted during the summers of 1959 and 1960 in the Baker Lake region of the Keewatin District of the Northwest Territories are reported. Discussions of social and economic changes which have occurred among the Eskimo and the Kabloona (White) inhabitants of the region comprise the major portion of the report. Accounts of daily living are cited, providing insight into the 2 cultures. Specific topics include the geographic and demographic setting, historical background, economy, kinship, family and marriage, the Kabloona, the Nunamiut (persons living outside the settlement who derive the largest proportion of their livelihoods from hunting, fishing, and trapping) and the Kabloonamiut (Eskimos living in the settlement and employed by Kabloona), formal education, religion, social control, and trends and comparisons dealing with such factors as Kabloona influence on the Eskimo culture, social structure, communications, and economy. Illustrations and tables accompany.
